Kalampaka is a town which combines both the traditional and the modern elements. It is the capital of homonym province. It occupies the northern department of the Prefecture of Trikala and the north-western end of Thessalian plain. Kalampaka is built in the feet of rocks of Meteora and near the left bank of river Penios.

The city is acquaintance from the antiquity. Initially, called "Aiginio" and later, in the Byzantine years, called "Stagoi". The origin of word "Kalampaka" is Turkish and means "powerful fortress". This name is in effect the last 6 - 7 centuries. Kalampaka was released from the Turkish balance on 27 August 1881. But at the duration of Macedonian fight it played also an important role while it was the base of operations of Greek fighters that went to help the brothers of Macedonia. The city was burned completely by the German troops of possession on 18 October 1943.

The rocks of Meteora are raised above Kalampaka and with their impressive beauty constitute a pole of attraction for thousands visitors that reach the region at the all duration of year in order to see and admire this infrequent and impressive phenomenon.
